Who is SommeChick, anyway? And why is she writing about wine when she barely seems to know the difference between a Bordeaux and a Burgundy?

Well, that’s actually exactly why I decided to begin writing about wine! If I don’t know the difference, likely lots of you don’t either, and I’m hoping we can learn together.

Over the past few years, I’ve been swept up by the world of wine (and it helps to live in California, one of the most well known wine producing regions of the world). There’s nothing like that first taste of great wine and how it catches you completely by surprise, leading you off on a new path of tastes, experiences, and memories. In fact, I’ve gotten so far down the wine trail, I decided to make a career of my new found passion, abandoning a well established history in healthcare–which I had become increasingly dissatisfied with. I took a chance and sent out my resume to wineries, wine bars, and retailers, sat back, and crossed my fingers. Not only did I hear back, I got two job offers in the industry, with one condition: I needed to learn more about wine. The basics just don’t cover it, and this is one instance when love is not enough!

So, here we are! I’ll be documenting my journey and everything I learn (and taste) along the way. I’ve chosen to apply to the sommelier program at the French Culinary Institute, and am planning to enroll in the fall, so stay tuned for an insider’s look into wine education as well!
